Microsoft Authenticator generates 30-second old Google Authenticator - Microsoft Community

i had been using tfa particular website years. website says requires google authenticator app, app not available on mobile device. years, able use codes microsoft authenticator, run on mobile device.

at point, screen on mobile device shattered , got replacement device , did backup , restore. today, learned backup , restore not restore microsoft authenticator accounts , instead system exceptions on failing totp code.

luckily, had emergency codes written on piece of paper , able log website. once there, generated qr code set tfa again, though microsoft authenticator code added account , generated 30 second codes, particular website rejected them "your verification code incorrect". can not set tfa microsoft authenticator!

i installed google authenticator on android device , noticed codes 1 series ahead. is, once google authenticator code expires, becomes microsoft authenticator code. tried authenticate fast after code became visible on microsoft authenticator, , still not fast enough particular website. if use google authenticator codes during 30-second window, work.

shouldn't google authenticator , microsoft authenticator generate same codes during same 30-second window?

both generate same codes. applications have implemented two-step verification using time-based one-time password algorithm (totp)(rfc 6238) , hmac-based one-time password algorithm (hotp)(rfc 4226). there other applications same thing.
