this syndrome has been irritating last few builds, particularly because microsoft basic video adapter driver resolves issue not installed in each new build rather fresh build insists on installing errant intel graphics driver. ancient dell optiplex 520 sff desktop has pci (i.e. not pcie) not use recent, cheap video card. found nvidia fx5200 pci card for only £15. installation last vista driver in compatibility mode seems have done trick , no more white box/no text syndrome , added bonus have sleep mode option not available ms basic video adapter driver.
i hope others with same problem may be encouraged try inexpensive solution.
