How to upgrade to 1703 without WinRE partition being created? - Microsoft Community

i let 1 of production machines upgrade 1703 via windows update / microsoft push, , during upgrade windows created new winre partition.  have multi-boot configuration , installed windows single partition, , intend keep way.

i cleaned upgraded machine it's single partition, question is: how preemptively perform 1703 upgrade /without/ allowing new winre partition created?  don't have clean-up on every single machine upgrade?

i have third-party boot manager allowing me dual/triple/quad/multi-boot, , prefer install windows instances using single partition.  i made partitioning choice during original windows installation... how stop windows update re-partitioning system?

one thing note, may know, files in wim file can added option not duplicate files. how there can multi-edition windows 10 iso, many different editions included in esd file, without multiplying in size. boot.wim contains 2 indexes, if many of files replicated, not mean doubles in size. means exporting esd "recovery" compression best way reduce size of recovery partition. also, capturing image not cleaned exporting captured wim wim or more compressed esd file.

upgrading windows creates copies of winre.wim used, when required, if upgrade fails , rolled back. also, "go previous version" option preserved 30 days, why recovery partition made. provides means of restoring original recovery partition.

relevant original post:  if apply (using powershell or dism) of files main index of wim file single partition , create bcd boot it, end result have recovery winre.wim in hidden folder @ c:\recovery, instead of in separate partition. not prevent subsequent windows version upgrade creating backup partition windows re @ end of boot partition. purpose of added partition (rollback last version) done in 30 days.

in many cases these days, 500mb not huge amount of disk space dedicate purpose. large drivers size may grow (and not compressed) there may maintenance can done reduce disk space used, not average user.
